Key takeaways
- For most teams in 2026, the best SEO tools are Semrush or Ahrefs as the core suite, Google Search Console for free first-party data and Screaming Frog for technical audits.
- No tool covers all five SEO jobs (research, tracking, technical audit, content, links) equally well: the right stack mixes one paid suite with free tools.
- Tracking AI answers is now a buying criterion: Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Surfer and BrightLocal include it at some tier, and Peec AI does nothing else.
- You can start at $0 with Search Console, Ahrefs Free and the free Screaming Frog, then pay once you track competitors or several sites.
The best SEO tools in 2026 are Semrush or Ahrefs as your core suite, Google Search Console for free data straight from Google, and Screaming Frog for technical audits. Add SE Ranking if budget matters, Surfer for content, BrightLocal for local search, and Peec AI if you need to see what ChatGPT says about your brand.
The list changed this year because of AI search. When Google shows an AI summary, people click a classic result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one, according to a Pew Research Center study. So I scored every tool on the classic SEO jobs and on a new one: can it tell you whether AI answers mention you.
Eight tools, one grid.
Ranked on what each tool covers for its price, with every price and AI feature checked on the vendor's own pages.
Awilix publishes this ranking. We are an SEO and GEO agency: we do not sell any of these tools, and none of them paid to be listed. Prices and features come from each vendor's own pages, checked in October 2026; tell us if one has changed and we will fix it.

Pick the tool that matches your situation.
You have no budget yet
Search Console, Ahrefs Free and the free Screaming Frog cover the basics on your own site.
You run one site for a small business
SE Ranking Core covers the five jobs and tracks AI prompts. Add BrightLocal if customers find you on Google Maps.
You write the content
Surfer for optimization, with Search Console to see what each page already ranks for.
You run several sites or an agency
Semrush or Ahrefs as the core. Semrush for AI visibility in the same login, Ahrefs if links drive your rankings.
You need to know what ChatGPT says about you
Peec AI as a dedicated tracker, or the AI module of the suite you already pay for.
The grid behind the ranking.
Five criteria, applied the same way to every tool.
-
01
Data quality
Where the data comes from (Google, an own index, your own crawl) and how fresh it is.
-
02
Jobs covered
How many of the five SEO jobs the tool does well: research, tracking, technical audit, content, links.
-
03
AI search coverage
Whether it shows your presence in AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini, and at which plan.
-
04
Price per useful seat
The entry price, what billing annually saves, and what extra seats and modules add.
-
05
Time to a first decision
How fast a non-expert gets from signing up to knowing what to fix.
What does an SEO tool actually do?
An SEO tool covers one or more of five jobs: keyword research, rank tracking, technical audits, content optimization and backlink analysis. None of the eight tools above covers all five equally well, which is why most teams pair one paid suite with free tools.
| Job | The question it answers | Strongest pick | Free option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyword research | What do people type, and how hard is it to rank? | Semrush, Ahrefs | Search Console (your own queries only) |
| Rank tracking | Where do my pages sit, week after week? | SE Ranking, Semrush | Search Console (average position) |
| Technical audit | What stops Google from crawling and indexing my pages? | Screaming Frog | Screaming Frog free, up to 500 URLs |
| Content optimization | What do the ranking pages cover that mine misses? | Surfer | Reading the top five results yourself |
| Backlink analysis | Who links to me and to my competitors? | Ahrefs | Ahrefs Free, on sites you verify |
How to read the table: a suite like Semrush or SE Ranking ticks every row, but the specialist in each row usually goes deeper. Pay for depth only in the job that limits your growth today.
On a site under 500 URLs, the free version of Screaming Frog runs the complete crawl. Start there, and work through a technical audit checklist before you pay for anything.
The SEO tool stack for your budget
You can run serious SEO on one site for $0 a month. Expect about $125 a month once you track rankings and competitors, and about $350 a month for a full stack with content and AI tracking.
| Monthly budget | What to buy | What stays free | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0 | Nothing | Search Console, Ahrefs Free, Screaming Frog (500 URLs), Bing Webmaster Tools | Competitor data, daily rank tracking, AI answers outside Google |
| About $125 | SE Ranking Core ($103.20 billed annually) and a Screaming Frog licence ($279 a year) | Search Console | Depth of the largest keyword and backlink databases |
| About $350 | Semrush One Starter ($165.17 billed annually) or Ahrefs Lite, Surfer Discovery ($49), Peec AI Starter ($80), Screaming Frog | Search Console | Very little for one brand; agencies add seats and white-label reports |
Prices are entry prices billed annually, checked on each vendor's pricing page in October 2026. Monthly billing costs more: Semrush's SEO plan is $139.95 a month, SE Ranking Core $129.
What to skip at first: a second suite, a standalone rank tracker if your suite already tracks daily, and any AI writing tool sold as SEO software. Each one adds a login and a bill before it adds a decision.
The hack nobody mentions: Ahrefs Free gives you site audits and backlink data for every site you can verify. If you run a handful of client sites, verify them all before you pay for a crawler.
Semrush or Ahrefs: which one should be your core suite?
Pick Semrush if you want every SEO job and AI visibility in one login. Pick Ahrefs if links and competitor research drive your rankings, and you are fine adding modules as you grow.
| Semrush | Ahrefs | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry price | SEO plan $139.95 a month, $117.33 billed annually | Lite $129 a month, $1,290 a year |
| Try before you pay | Free plan (10 reports a day) and a 7-day trial | Ahrefs Free on your own sites, no trial |
| AI answers | AI Visibility Toolkit from the Starter plan ($199 a month), or $99 a month per domain | 150 prompt checks a month on Lite, full AI indexes from $199 a month |
| Data claim | 28B+ keywords in 142 databases, Semrush says | 10+ years of data from the second most active crawler, Ahrefs says |
| Extra seats | From $45 a month | From $40 a month |
The rule of thumb: both bills grow the same way, through seats, projects and AI modules. Before you sign, list the three reports you will open every week and check which plan includes them. If one report sits in a higher tier, price that tier, not the entry plan.
Which SEO tools track ChatGPT and AI Overviews?
Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Surfer and BrightLocal now track AI answers at some tier, and Peec AI does nothing else. Search Console reports your impressions in Google's AI features, but it stays blind to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.
What Search Console shows now: since August 31, 2026, every site gets a Generative AI performance report with its impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Impressions only: no clicks, no queries, and nothing from other assistants.
The modules differ more than their names suggest. Here is what to check before you pay for one:
- The engines covered. SE Ranking does not list Perplexity, BrightLocal tracks ChatGPT and Google's AI features, Peec AI lets you pick three models per plan.
- How often prompts run. Surfer's Standard plan checks ChatGPT weekly; its Pro plan runs every model daily.
- Mentions versus citations. A mention puts your brand in the answer; a citation links your page as a source. You want both reported separately.
- The competitors named. The real insight is who gets recommended instead of you, and from which sources.
Measuring this is how you prove that AI visibility work pays. On an AI visibility PR campaign, we tracked a 25% detection rate on LLMs, a number no classic rank tracker would have shown.
The full method, from choosing prompts to reading citations, is in my guide to tracking AI visibility.
The free SEO tools that cover the basics
Free tools cover more than most people think, as long as you only need data on your own site:
- Google Search Console: queries, clicks, positions, indexing, and now your impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- Bing Webmaster Tools: the same kind of data for Bing, free.
- Screaming Frog, free version: a complete technical crawl up to 500 URLs.
- Ahrefs Free: site audits and backlinks for the sites you verify.
- Semrush free plan: 10 reports a day across the main tools, enough to check a competitor now and then.
- PageSpeed Insights: Core Web Vitals and loading issues, page by page.
- Google Trends and Keyword Planner: the direction of demand and rough volumes (Keyword Planner needs a Google Ads account).
The limit is always the same: none of them shows your competitors in depth, and none tracks AI assistants outside Google. That is usually the moment a paid suite earns its price.
When the tool is not the bottleneck
Many teams have more data than decisions. Watch for these signs before you add a subscription:
- You check rankings every morning and nothing changes on the site.
- The audit lists hundreds of issues and nobody knows which three matter.
- You pay for two suites that answer the same questions.
- AI answers recommend your competitors, and no report explains why.
At that point another tool will not help, a priority list will. A full SEO audit gives you that list, with the fixes ranked by impact.
Next step: if you want me to look at your site, the audit is free and comes back within 24 hours. Book a call and we'll go through your stack together.
Frequently asked questions
Pay when a free tool stops answering a question you ask every week. The usual triggers are tracking rankings daily on more than a handful of keywords, studying a competitor's backlinks or keywords, crawling a site above 500 URLs, or reporting to a client. Before that point, Search Console, Ahrefs Free and the free version of Screaming Frog cover one site well.
Google Search Console, because it shows real data from Google on your own site and costs nothing. Once you need more, SE Ranking is the easiest paid suite to try: all five SEO jobs, a 14-day trial and no credit card. Reviewers describe Semrush and Screaming Frog as harder to learn at first.
No. A tool measures whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI features mention you and which sources they cite. Getting cited comes from the work those numbers point to: pages that answer the question clearly, a brand that other trusted sites mention, and content AI crawlers can read. Use the tracker to pick priorities and to check that the work pays.
Their search volumes and traffic figures are estimates built from their own databases, so two tools rarely agree on the same keyword. Use them to compare options and spot trends, not as exact counts. For your own site, Search Console is the reference: it reports the clicks and impressions Google actually recorded.
They replace the manual data work, not the decisions. A tool lists what is wrong and where you rank; someone still has to choose the three fixes that matter, write the pages and earn the links. Many teams run the tools in-house and bring an agency in for strategy, technical projects or AI visibility.
